Writing tutors in Western Cape

I consider myself a story teller. As someone who studied History and Art History, writing essays have not been a struggle for me. I wasn't one who struggled to reach the minimum word count, but rather struggled staying under the maximum word count! In Art history, students were required to write a minimum of 3 pages per question, so not only has essay writing, story telling and, question observation been a born love of mine, I have learnt the methods, tips and tricks in writing.

I received an A for English in high school, for all three papers - literature, creative writing, and vocabulary. I also took English literature and vocabulary in my first year of university. I absolutely love English. I have over 5 years of English tutoring experience. I have spent almost my entire life writing, be it academic papers, journal articles, or fiction and fantasy. I have a real passion for it.

With young children, I am trained in teaching spelling and basic sentence structures (and have taught for two years). At high school level, I obtained 91% for my IEB English portfolio which contained various types of writing pieces. As an university student, I am well practised in writing academic essays on a variety of topics and have on average received As for all English assignments.

I have worked as a technical writer for over two years, and have been involved in the academic industry for over five years. English is my native tongue and I aspire to always write and speak the highest level.

I am an Applied English Language Studies and General Linguistics lecturer. I have been teaching for 5 years, and have experience not only with lecturing, but also with tutorial classes, private classes, and additional support classes. I am also currently doing my PhD in Linguistics, and have extensive experience with academic writing.

English has always been one of my favourite subjects. I am an avid reader and I am fastidious about grammar, punctuation and the likes! In high school, I did both English first language (FAL) and Advanced Programme English. I achieved a distinction for both. I also have experience in teaching English. I am patient and thorough which I feel are both important skills when teaching English. I hope to instil my love of the language in all of my students!

I have been an English language editor for seven years. I have extensive experience in coaching authors and students at all levels in a variety of contexts and correcting language problems. I am able to assist English second-language speakers, adults and youths. I can offer effective coaching and training in business and academic writing. I have a BA in English language and literature, which was awarded with distinction. I am currently registered as an English honours student.

Writing is a hobby of mine that I would like to pursue professionally and so I have developed this skill by writing for my high school newsletter, writing my own short stories and perfecting my essay researching and structuring skills. This is truly a passion of mine and something I find comes naturally to me.

Throughout my academic career, whether it be at School or University-level, I have excelled at subjects in which a strong command of writing is essential to meeting the requirements of a course or subject. Whether it be History, English Literary Theory, Post-Structuralist Semiotics or a Post-graduate Honour's Dissertation, they all invariably require one to be able to write! Many of you reading this will have doubtlessly been introduced to writing as some rigid, formal structure which may have the misfortunate effect of constraining the ability of your inner voice to construct an argument or develop an essay answer to an exam question. Fear not! For I, as your tutor, will show you how writing - far from being some hoary antique of institutions past - is in fact a miraculous tool with which we may articulate those deepest thoughts in our heads that we never seem able to attach words to, lest we embarrass ourselves. Do not take it for granted that you simply "struggle" with writing. Consider, alternatively, that your uneasy acquaintance with writing may be the result of a "one-size fits all" pedagogy which didn't have your talent in mind for the teaching. There's a writer that lurks within you, let me help you find it!

Writing for a variety of purposes and in a way that uses correct formation and spacing is key in the Primary school phase. I am best able to assist in this subject because of my experience and passion to help each student reach their full potential.
