Sambharthan C - Tutor in Murrayfield

My name is Sam and I have studied and trained as an Engineer. I completed my A-Levels in England and achieved A's in Maths, Physics and Chemistry. Maths was favourite subject. I have a real skill for explaining complex topics in an easy to understand manner. I have experience of tutoring at university level, including 2nd year design, 1st year dynamics and Critical Thinking. My skill set is Maths, Physics and Chemistry. I want to help high school and A-Level students.

Tutor

During my undergraduate degree, we were required to fulfil tutoring duties. The subject I was given was second year Design. This involved being present at the tutorials and providing assistance to students wherever they needed. Each tutor was assigned a group of students, where the tutorials were handed in, marked, submitted and returned to the students. The concurred throughout second semester and the tutorials spanned the entire afternoon.

Tutor

During my Master’s degree, I applied for two tutoring jobs; one in first year dynamics and the other in Critical Thinking. Both were group-based tutorials. The dynamics tutorials took place in a large venue, with occasionally over a hundred students. The senior tutor presented the content and it was my responsibility to help the students with any questions they had about the content presented. Critical Thinking had a different structure. Again, the tutors were assigned groups of students. The tutor had to present content and assign exercises. The content and exercises was prearranged. The responsibilities of the tutor included taking the register, making sure exercises were complete, marking if necessary, and helping and responding to student’s emails. I have a significant number of hours as an invigilator. Making sure the exams and tests started on time, ensuring the exam progressed smoothly and collecting all the exam scripts.

Engineer - PhD Studentship

I was offered a PhD studentship based on my work during the internship. My research topic is aligned with ASC’s (Aeronautics Systems Competency) interests, in order to set-up a new capability that has the potential to attach a wider client base. One of the focal points is too create a simulation which replicates a standard missile control system. The system itself is comprised of a number of subsystems (seeker, guidance algorithm, controller and aerodynamics). The development, analysis and evaluation of the guidance law are the focus of the PhD. The controller/s and the aerodynamics are designed and developed to the missile’s specifications and capabilities. The capabilities of the missile are unique, and require an understanding and application of knowledge that go beyond the standard missile textbooks. To date, my research has resulted in collaboration with an expert in the field of missile seekers (Professor H. Mouton-30 years of experience at Denel Dynamics) and has been the basis for preliminary design work on other contract related work. In addition to my PhD, I have been involved in the design of a Modular Transonic Research Platform (MTRP). I was part of a team of four, responsible for the conceptual design. My contribution (beyond generating concepts, analysing user requirements and meeting with the client) was the performance analysis; take-off and landing distances, climb and cruise evaluation, drag estimations and producing SEP (Specific Excess Power) charts. The work was completed and passed through a design review. Thereafter the design was presented at conferences and to CSIR stakeholders.

  • Chemistry

Got a distinction for A-Level Chemistry. This covers a wide range of topics. I still have all of my notes in very good condition. I have a few learning techniques that helped me, that I can pass on.

  • Physics

Got a distinction for A-Level Physics. I attended masterclasses and have covered a range of subjects during my degree. Physics is a subject that I found very interesting and challenging. When you can understand a complex theory and apply your knowledge to solving a problem, it is a very satisfying feeling.
