I am a passionate English Literature Bachelor of Honours (B(Hons)) student at Stellenbosch University. I am doing my research in postmodern Holocaust literature and I am interested in a range of topics from American Renaissance literature to postcolonial and critical theory. Next year, in 2021, I intend doing my Master's degree, continuing at Stellenbosch University and eventually I wish to work as a lecturer and researcher in the field. English Literature is an exciting field of work and can be incredibly rewarding when understood well. I graduated with distinction in my undergraduate Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Psychology (with an aggregate of 83%) and my final mark for English Literature in third year was 85%. In addition, I was awarded the English subject prize and the top student in my undergraduate degree overall.

I am a Mathematics and Science High School and College Teacher who has also taught primary school Intervention in English and Afrikaans as well as Mathematics. I have been very ill and hence have a voice problem but as soon as learners get used to my voice they understand it without any issue. I have been teaching for 35 years and have taught learners from 6-65 years of age. I am also an eternal student and love learning myself. I have a masters degree in Mathematics education. I am passionate about my learners and empathetic towards them and will go out of my way to help them in any way I can. My other interests include craft (sewing, embroidery, sewing, knitting], reading and music[ I love playing the piano]. I try to teach from going from the perspective of what you know and using it to get to what you do not yet know and have to learn. I expect my learners to practice and master the work we have covered in lessons so that we can progress easily. I do however understand that life happens and this is not always possible. If you do not understand a concept I will try to approach it from different angles until you do get it. Another of my pet things is to use real life examples especially from the learner's life so that the lessons are relevant and exciting to you. I believe lessons should be fun and something to look forward to so try to keep good humor going through out.

My hobbies include surfing, music (I played the piano and violin in high school), horse-riding and just hanging out with my friends. Ruan Strauss Kalis was born in Paarl, South Africa, commencing piano and music theory studies at age 10. At age 14 he took up organ lessons and shortly after started studying composition under Paul Loeb van Zuilenberg (1993 – 1996). He matriculated at Paarl Boys’ High School in 1996. His professional music studies, majoring in Piano Performance, commenced in 1997 at the University of Stellenbosch under the guidance of the esteemed pianist and pedagogue, Melanie Horne. Following her death in 1998, he moved his studies to the University of Cape Town, where he completed the Performer’s Diploma in Music (majoring in Piano Performance) under the guidance of distinguished professors Lamar Crowson and Graham Fitch. Whilst studying for his undergraduate qualification, he performed at several masterclasses from renowned pianists, among which Leslie Howard, Martino Tirimo and Andrzej Jasiński. During the years 2003 and 2004, he taught piano and music as high school subject at Reddam House Atlantic Seaboard (College), as well as privately and later at the Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of the Western Cape. At the same time he wrote, compiled and hosted a radio programme for Fine Music Radio, as well as reading the news and weather reports. This period was followed by several years working in the hospitality industry, which included a year’s residency in London (U.K.). In 2012, he was appointed as Sales and Marketing Consultant for a piano specialist company, Ian Burgess-Simpson Pianos in Muizenberg, where he also fulfilled the roll as resident pianist, requiring regular performances for prospective buyers as well as for promotional purposes. In March 2013 his musical setting of poems from Antjie Krog’s Verweerskrif – a song cycle for Voice and Piano – was premiered at the Woordfees in Stellenbosch. Since his departure from Ian Burgess-Simpson Pianos, he has established himself as a voice artist, continues to compose and has commenced preparation for returning to the concert platform as pianist. He has also functioned as freelance organist up until the present date. Furthermore, he is a keen student of languages, having studied German to Matric level and later a refresher course, alongside an introductory course in French and currently Italian.

I am currently doing my postgraduate studies at UCT to achieve my honours in Historical Studies. I completed my undergraduate degree with majors in Historical Studies and French Literature. I am an avid reader and I love to learn new and interesting things about the world that we live in, it is one of my greatest pleasures to pass this information on to others. I have a long history of working with young people, as a swimming teacher and a tutor in the past. I love engaging with young minds, and feel that I am an approachable and friendly person.

I have a passion and an instinct for the English language, and successfully completed the i-to-i-TEFL course in 2015. The 2 years succeeding that have prevented me from pursuing TEFL (work tours) but I feel that the right time is approaching and I would dearly love to put my TEFL skills to use.

I am a qualified Foundation phase teacher who is passionate about learning and making it fun! I have taught from primary to A-Levels and enjoy finding ways to assist learner to reach their full potential!
