Dominic N - Tutor in Sea Point

I have been a TEFL/TESOL for the past 3 years and have spent time teaching different types of students from different backgrounds in different settings. From general English for daily use, IELTS, and English for business, I have taught it all! I have single-handedly seen a number of students through their course from elementary level (A2) to advanced (C1) in record time. I enjoy being presented with challenges, so the more unique the purpose of you wanted to learn the English language, the better! No matter your need for the language, I'm here to help you achieve your goals. See you in the lesson!

Educator

My day starts at 6 am where I consult my diary, prepare my lessons for the day, and respond to emails and queries from students. Between lessons, I send any notes from the lesson and homework to my students. Most of my day is spent teaching and preparing for lessons, finally ending around 7 pm, sometimes later if I am teaching students from other time zones.

Certificate to Teach English as a Foreign Language/Teach English to Speakers of Other Languages

Subjects taught
  • English Literature

Being an avid reader, English literature is my niche. I specialize in set workbooks and poetry but can apply the same skills for short pieces of text for beginner readers just as easily and readily. My skillset in this niche starts at recognizing sound devices and phonemes and expands to peer reviews and academic literature.

  • English as a foreign Language

I have taught students of different levels from all over the world, including native speakers, and all have excelled in their mid-and end of course examinations. My teaching methods take a creative approach, incorporating students' interests and learning types, to teach as effectively as possible and create a perfect learning environment

  • Vocabulary

I introduce new vocabulary through examples, elicit and induce meaning through context, highlight syllables, sounds, and word stress, as well as get the student to recycle and use the new vocabulary immediately to cement the new information into memory.

  • Writing

In this digital age, formal writing has become the dominant sphere of English writing. CV's and resumes are where I specialize, but I also appropriate keywords for content writing and marketing messages, as well as get the learner to fire up their creative engines and create imagery through their writing that will spark the reader's 5 senses

  • Grammar

Through the communicative approach, I 'trick' learners into new grammar by getting them to use the structures without knowing, and then teach them more about the structures and examples thereof. For more advanced learners, I use the flipped-learning approach where students discover the grammar for themselves, try their hand at it, and then revise it in the classroom where they identify and correct their own or their peers' mistakes
