Janice S - Tutor in Hatfield

I am currently a homeschooling tutor for grade 3 and 7 students and have 5 years of experience teaching English as a foreign language, both overseas in South Korea and in South Africa. I love engaging with students to foster an encouraging and safe learning environment. I believe that developing the students confidence to learn new work and try new challenges is the best way to foster a love for learning that goes beyond the subject I am helping them learn.

Experience / Education
I currently teach to students who are doing homeschooling, they are in grade 3 and grade 7. I manage their working schedule and work load as well as more hands-on teaching with the third grader. I also plan field trips for science and history that engages with their curriculum. I have worked as an assistant researcher at the Afro-Middle East Center in Johannesburg, while doing my masters degree which I am in the process of completing at the University of Pretoria. While I was at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, I tutored in the Politics department too. I have three years experience teaching English as a foreign language in South Korea, starting as at an Elementary school in the government EPIK program and then shifting to an after school academy where I developed the curriculum for our conversational classes with students ranging for Grade 3 to Grade 12 and a few college level classes. Since being back in South Africa, I have tutored Korean students in Cape Town (face-to-face) and Korean and Spanish students online via Skype.
Subjects taught
  • English Literature

Studying literature is critical for a student to develop the analytical tools to help with communication and learning that becomes important at university and in the work place. I strive to help the student enjoy this subject too as a love for literature is a great thing to have too.

  • English as a foreign Language

I have over five years of experience teaching English as a foreign/second language. Mainly to Korean students, but also to Spanish students and some South Africans. English is tough to learn as foreign language but I have developed creative ways to help my students to engage in English over the years that make the task less scary. Conversational English is my specialty with a focus on communication and building confidence when speaking. I also have experience with preparation for the IELTS exam.

  • Vocabulary

Vocabulary building as and English student is essential to succeeding academically. In order to effectively communicate ideas in an engaging way, students need to develop an extensive vocabulary. My approach to learning vocabulary is to make it interesting and engaging rather than just learning lists of words that seem random and useless.

  • Writing

Mastering writing is as important as mastering reading. It is important to me that writing lessons are approached in an engaging way that fosters an interest in it with the student. I like getting students to write about things that interest them in order to engage with the subject more. I also enjoy learning about all sorts of subjects I would otherwise not come across!

  • Reading

Improving reading skills can be a hard task and a sensitive one too when students feel embarrassed about having to read out loud or make mistakes. My view is that mistakes are all part of the learning process and that it is very important to have a safe and respectful environment when students are practicing reading skills in particular. I find that patience and kindness are the most important skills when teaching reading and for this reason, it is one of my favourite skills to help my students develop further.
