Primary School Educator

As a primary school educator I taught 28 boys. I taught them English, Maths, Science, Social studies, Afrikaans and Computer technology. This required me to plan and progress through the content of each subject. I had to carry out all the assessments for these students too. In the afternoons I coached sport to senior students at the school.

Art Curator

As an art curator I was required to plan exhibitions for artists and designers. This required me to get a real understanding of the artist's approach to art making and through planning the exhibition needed to help the viewer to make more sense of their work. I had to promote the artist's work through media platforms and events such as exhibition openings and artist discussions. The art curator needs to organise the lighting and painting of the exhibition space. The art curator is in charge of framing an artist's work for the exhibition. The curator has to manage the selling of the artist's work as well as all the costs involved in running the gallery.

High School Educator

As a high school educator I taught English to 4 Grade 10 classes, 4 Grade 11 classes and 4 Grade 12 classes. I was required to plan lesson content and material before my classes as well as reflections after lessons. Between teaching I was busy with assessments for my co-teachers. On Friday afternoon I held small group sessions with students who need to practice their English presentations. On Monday mornings students would present projects in English to the rest of the school. This would follow up with a Question-and-Answer session. I would then give the students feedback on Monday afternoons and students would reflect on their presentation experience. I would also plan and run small group adult conversation classes for teachers at the school. There was also an English resource room where students were able to play English activity games and to source new English books to read. I would help them to understand what each book is about. Each week there would also be tutorial sessions where I would help students edit English articles that they wrote for the school's English magazine.

  • Reading

As a voracious reader myself, I am very keen to get my students to read more and to extend their vocabulary and grammar. I help my students read with greater fluency and to emphasise key concepts and phrases in a text. I enable my students to re-read text and teach them how to summarize to gain a better understanding of what they have read. I teach students how to process and internalize what they have read.

  • Grammar

English grammar is critical for students progressing in English. Students must be able to construct sentences correctly with the necessary word order so that they show an understanding of the specific theme of the text. Effective communication requires grammatically correct language. This includes spelling too.

  • History of Art

Having studied a degree in Fine Art I have much experience in this subject and content. This included the way the visual world influences us on a daily basis and how students need to become more visually literate in how to read adverts. Fine Art teaches us that there numerous ways of seeing a situation and how important it is to contextualise a visual moment. I have much experience in art theory and how to write effectively in terms of structure and content. I can therefore help students to improve the way that they write specific to an art historical context.
