Amy T - Tutor in Melville

I am a first-year student at Wits, currently studying a BSc in Biological Sciences. I believe that a strong education is the most powerful tool in today's society- simply due to the vast array of opportunities it opens up. Because of this, teaching is one of my passions, and I believe that an effective tutor is someone who can explain a concept to students by linking ideas that are already understood to ideas that are yet to be understood. Learning is a personal process and it is very closely linked to one's self-esteem, I would like to help students find their confidence in their work. The subjects i currently take are Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Psychology.

Au Pairing

I worked for my first family for just over a year, I cared for two girls aged 5 and 7. My second family I worked for was also two girls, aged 5 and 8 for seven months before the lockdown for Covid-19 started. My responsibilities for both families included fetching from school, taking the girls to their extramurals and helping them with their homework.

First year of BSc in Biological Sciences - University of the Witswatersrand

I completed my first year of my BSc at Wits. My modules were Introductory Life Sciences (Biology) major, Chemistry, Psychology and Auxiliary Mathematics. I moved to Unisa for my second year because they allow students to take modules cross-faculty- I'm interested in Psychology which is Humanities as well as Physiology, which is covered by the Health Science faculty. My aim is to study Neuroscience (the study of the brain).

2012-01-01 - 2016-12-01
National Senior Certificate - Bryanston High School

I completed matric in 2016 with six distinctions (English, Afrikaans, Biology, Mathematics, Drama and Life Orientation).

Subjects taught
  • Mathematics

Maths is the subject that I'm most passionate about. I received 83% for maths in matric and completed Auxiliary Mathematics in first year. I have extensive experience and find fulfillment in sharing my love for the subject. I believe that no one is "bad" at Maths, they just haven't been given the basic tools on some level of understanding before the curriculum moves on without them. I am great at finding where each student's gaps are and helping them grow in their confidence.

  • Chemistry

I received 76% for Physical Sciences in matric and completed Chemistry first year. Chemistry is a system that describes every substance known to humans. It centres around the periodic table, and if you understand the basic tenets you can build your understanding from there. I'd be a great tutor because I start from the foundation and work up from there.

  • Biology

I received 82% for biology in matric and completed Introductory Life Sciences in first year. The structure of the human body is logical and incredible. I'm a great tutor for students wanting help with biology because I prioritize understanding, and finding the words to make concepts click. Once you have the structure you can start memorizing the terminology in a method that works for you, and I can help find which one.

  • English Language

I received 86% for English in matric. English is my home language and the subject that I tutor second most after mathematics. I love reading, and find that encouraging interacting with a language as much as possible makes a massive difference. I use my own experience to make studing concepts from comprehension, to other important skills such as summary writing, visual literacy and interpreting literature more relateable.

  • Drama

I received 94% for drama in matric. I love theatre, and the process of studying a play. Both the theory and practical work are challenging in their own way and it helps to have someone experienced with the style of questioning and examination.
