BSc Special Needs Education - Xavier University

Special Needs Education prepares students as classroom teachers by providing a foundation in the liberal arts and in child-centered learning and development intervention competencies. The program is theory-based and includes continual field experiences. Students choose to specialize in one of three areas as an Intervention Specialist, I chose a concentration in mild to moderate as a reading intervention specialist.

Subjects taught
  • Afrikaans

I am bilingual in English and Afrikaans thus, I am fully comfortable with the language that troubles many - Afrikaans. I received an A in matric for the subject and have a deep understanding of the language and ways in which to teach it.

  • Writing

Writing is an area in which we spend most of our daily lives exploring. It encompasses many forms of which a student needs to be fully aware and comfortable with. Writing has forever been my strongest realm and passion. I feel as though, through personal experience and my studies, I will be able to carry a student from the foundations of writing and beyond.

  • Reading

Through university we focused on reading instruction and the Orton Gillingham Phonics approach as well as many other approaches to teaching a student to read. Having completed 3 modules in this area of English I feel highly experienced and qualified. Reading is the foundation of all English and I believe that the necessary attention needs to be applied to this skill.
