I completed my Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Economics at University Witwatersrand last year. Through my studies, I have acquired knowledge and skills particularly related to coding using languages such as Python, C++, and Java; and data pre-processing, analysis, modelling, interpreting insights and visualization skills through a range of practical experience. During the university study breaks, I was on a vacation work at the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) Research Lab where I got to work on Machine learning, data mining, conducting research, coding, artificial intelligence and robotics. I also took part in an entrepreneurship incubation programme hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Global Start-up Labs. This programme actually inspired me to participate in the Student Datathon, which is an initiative of Data Intensive Research Initiative of South Africa (DIRISA) because the objective was to solve South African problems using Open Data and Business Modelling. The most important lesson that I learned from the vacation work and the programmes I participated in is that working with other people towards a common goal enables finding new solutions to problems in the most effective and efficient way, which is something I enjoyed a lot and believe is a great advantage in many cases.
