I have an honour's degree in molecular biology and I am currently an intern medical scientist. Next year (2020) I will finally begin pursuing my MSc, as I am interested in growing and developing my career as a scientist. I am also a creative and active individual - participating in local art fairs regularly as well as growing my skills in yoga/acrobatics. If I weren't a scientist I'd probably be an artist.

My routine work involves a range of haematological diagnostics tests/assays. These include blood grouping (such as Coomb's tests), various cytochemical stains (Perl's prussian; periodic acid schiff's; myeloperoxidase etc.), high performance liquid chromatography for screening haemoglobinopathies and agarose gels. I also perform qPCR assays for the detection of JAK2, FVL and prothrombin mutations. Apart from my routine work, I am also currently running two research projects: - "The prevalence and spectrum of haemoglobinopathies in Pretoria" which is basically a statistical analysis; and - "Validation of a real-time PCR assay for the detection of CALR mutations in myeloproliferative neoplasm patients" which aims to be the first qPCR assay for detecting CALR in South Africa.
This subject is the basis of my career. As i grow as a scientist, so does my repertoire, giving me specialized insight to the challenges that lay in the field of biology. Biology is a subject that is constantly growing, changing and even redefining - it is therefore imperative that you have someone who is growing with the subject, to teach it.
