Jaylin d - Tutor in Henley on Klip

I am a young and passionate young woman with a love for psychology and children. I aim to broaden my experience in education and child-care in preparation for a future in psychology. I am dedicated and driven, and I believe in exploring various approaches to problems in order to meet everyone’s needs. I matriculated from Roedean School SA with 7 distinctions and went on to graduate from the University of the Witwatersrand in BA General with distinction, majoring in Psychology and Music History. Later, I received my Honours in Psychology at the same university. In 2020, I studied a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) through Stadio Institute of Education, and I am now a qualified teacher. Despite it being a principal aim of the latest CAPS curriculum, many learners feel that their individuality is overlooked in the classroom. I believe that - as a teacher - one needs to acknowledge and cater for the different learning paces and strengths in the same class. Thus, I believe in integrating various learning styles; first building a foundation and then letting my learners explore how they understand concepts best. Therefore, I believe that patience is indeed a virtue, and I promote co-operative learning in the classroom. When it comes to extra support, I prefer to build on the learner’s classwork as a foundation, and then discovering and providing for specific areas that the learner finds difficult. I have found that breaking a subject down into specific problem areas helps learners understand concepts better and be more capable in building on that knowledge in the future.

Tutor

I have tutored various ages in a variety of subjects, This ranges from basic homework supervision and test preparation for primary school learners, to exam preparation and study techniques for matric English and mathematical literacy. I prefer to base my tutoring on the learner's classwork as it enables me to identify problem areas. The learner can then expect to receive additional work and notes from me to complete both together and on their own until they feel comfortable in all subject areas.

Subjects taught
  • Math

Mathematics is one of my favourite subjects to teach and tutor. I specialise in teaching core mathematics until grade 9, and have recently had the honour to tutor matrics in mathematical literacy. I struggled with mathematics after I was absent for two weeks in grade 8 thanks to being ill. After losing that foundational knowledge, I found the rest of the content difficult to understand. It was only with the help and support of an incredible tutor that I managed to achieve a distinction in matric. Thus, I know what it's like to struggle, and I also know various ways of explaining the same concept so that students with different learning styles and paces can still excel in the subject.

  • English Language and Literature

I have always had a love for reading, as well as delving into and writing my own poetry. I thus enjoy showing learners the world behind words and punctuation. For learners who struggle with abstract thought, I am able to describe even the works of Shakespeare in a more understandable way for the more technical minded.
