Organization Type Construction and mining consultancy providing engineering, procurement, and construction management services to mining corporations. Position Vendor Management Coordinator – Fixed term contract. Task Develop the business case and the deliverables for the project plan to implement preferential procurement legislation as prescribed by the changes to the Mining Charter III and B-BBEE Act 53 of 2003. Approach The magnitude of the impact of the changes to preferential procurement legislation across the organization was unknown and had to be described from a systemic perspective. Therefore, I approached the task as a consultant. I took the role as a Fact Finder; collecting and interpreting information to develop an understanding of the organizations processes, and the role of a Joint Problem Solver to actively work with each stakeholder to describe the problem, its causes, generate solutions, evaluating alternatives, choosing a solution and developing an action plan (Nolan, T.M. 1998). Fact Finding To identify all Stakeholders, I used snowball sampling and used informal individual interviews to determine what each’s role, responsibilities, interest, and engagement level in the project would be. The informal interviews were structured firstly, to determine the current state of the organization’s processes and procedures and each stakeholder’s perspective on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in the current state. This information was used to write a problem statement and to understand each stakeholder’s needs. Secondly, the informal interviews introduced the requirements of the new legislation to stakeholders, and the outcomes of the discussions were used to describe the future state for organizational procedures and processes, the key business requirements, the success criteria and the solution statement for the project. I examined the organizations current policies, procedures, workflows, templates, and the capabilities of its existing software, and also those of the organizations’ major clients, competitors, and vendors to develop the scope of the project and to provide alternative solutions. A second round of individual informal interviews involved presenting a concept of the solution and asking input. Joint Problem Solver The success criteria and estimated return on investment of the project were used to evaluate each alternative in workshops with departmental heads and an external B-BBEE consultant. The motivation for the chosen solution and the project budget were jointly determined. The proposed action plan stipulated the project deliverables, resources, and budget. My deliverables as an employee were the drafts of the preferential procurement policy, the procurement policy, the roles, and responsibilities of the preferential procurement committee, and gathering the documents and data needed for the development of the implementation software.
I completed my Hons. over two years and enrolled for 2 additional subjects, thus completing all the Hons. modules that UNISA offers. This degree was a life-changer. I loved every minute of it!
I have been Tutoring Afrikaans (First Additional Language) in the Kyalami area for the past year to grade 6, 7and 8 learners. I go the extra mile to include material from newspapers, tv and radio; making the language real, because many families do not speak Afrikaans at home, making it hard for students to develop a vocabulary and to understand the value of knowing another language.
