Izabel d - Tutor in Roodeplaat

Hi! My name is Izabel. I am a freelance artist/illustrator and tutor and I love all things creative. I have a Master's degree in Literature from the University of Cape Town, which is also where I did my Bachelor's degree. I'm a big book nerd who enjoys reading fiction, fantasy and I the odd bit of poetry. I recently spent a year abroad and learned a lot about myself and parts of Western Europe. I can speak and understand a bit of Dutch and a bit of Spanish. I enjoy cooking, spending time with friends and participating in alternative sports like climbing and slacklining. I also love a good film accompanied by some popcorn.

Part Time Freelance Artist

Since leaving High school I have worked part-time as a freelance visual artist. Over the years I have painted realism style paintings of wildlife for lodges in Gauteng and KZN. I have done illustrations for a company and for private clients. I have sold personal work at group exhibitions. Each project is different and has its own timeline and criteria.

Tutor and Au Pair

I have experience as an Au Pair and tutor. I worked for a family who have a son with Down Syndrome. I used to fetch him from school and take him to his therapy sessions and help him with homework and do creative play together. I would also help his brother with homework when he arrived at home. I tutored the first and second year medical students Afrikaans at UCT for a few months. The lessons consisted of learning some basic Afrikaans to enable them to communicate with the Afrikaans speaking community in the Western Cape. I recently spent 13 months working as an Au Pair in the Netherlands as a cultural exchange, so I have a lot of recent experience with kids. I am patient and kind and can be goofy.

Subjects taught
  • History

I enjoy teaching and learning about History and I did well in High school. Throughout my University career there was a focus on History in the majority of subjects that I took. Social Anthropology, Religious studies, Philosophy and Politics all focused on history.

  • Afrikaans

I am a native Afrikaans speaker who is passionate about teaching Afrikaans as a language. I wrote my Master's dissertation on the work of an Afrikaans poet and I continue to read and promote Afrikaans literature and poetry amongst my (stubborn) friends and family. I know Afrikaans can seem hard and sometimes the coursework is bland, but it is most definitely a worthwhile subject that you can enjoy. I can help with that!
