Katlego M - Tutor in Die Hoewes

I am a young and vibrant female. I have an Honours degree in Publishing from the University of Pretoria. I believe that I am a versatile individual who is always looking at alternative methods of problem solving. I also believe that I am able to relate with challenges that students face because I too was a student a few years ago. It can be a challenge trying to balance a social life and school work at the same time. As much as I enjoy editing and proofreading content, I enjoy structuring and restructuring content so that it is easily understood at first read.

Commissioning Editor

In a publishing house, day-to-day tasks would depend on the project at hand. I was responsible for managing authors, liaising with editors and reviewers as well as individuals from internal and external departments. I would often start my day with checking and responding to emails. There are days where I would attend meetings all day and days where I would be glued to my desk until I was done with what I had planned for the day. In a project, I would have to check content from the author to see if it meets the requirements in the author brief. I would then commission an editor whom I would work with until the content is fully edited. In conjunction with the editing, I would work with artists who create illustrations for the content and check if the illustrations have been created according to the artist brief. I would also liaise with typesetters after the book has been edited. Once the content has been edited, proofread, reviewed and typeset, it is time for final checks before it can be signed off for printing.

BIS (Hons) Publishing - University of Pretoria

The objectives of the programme are to equip students with background knowledge on the industry, role players and trends, as well as with specific skills linked to the publishing value chain. These skills include: the commissioning of manuscripts aimed at specific markets; the management of the design, reproduction and printing phase; copy-editing and proofreading; financial and marketing management. Students are empowered to act as responsible information intermediaries who can add value to publications during the various phases of the publishing process.

Subjects taught
  • Writing

I know how it feels writing content and thinking that it is the best, only to have a lecturer draw lines through all 6 pages of an essay. I know how it feels having a supervisor criticize content that I had worked on for a whole semester only to get 40%. I have learned to unpack topics and analyze them thoroughly. I have learned how to group content and structure it in a manner that makes sense to the reader. It takes time and a lot of research before content can be meaningful to a reader.
