My name is Pieter. I have studied Engineering. Engineers use mathematics as a set of tools. Each mathematical module from the most simple to the most complex is a tool to perform a certain function. You don't need all the tools at first. But as you learn different modules and become familiar with more mathematical rules and principles the tools you will have at your disposal will increase. Mathematics is always growing. As we encounter problems we cannot solve with our current tools we learn more about the tools out there and when we can identify what tool we need we can study that tool. In 1665 Isaac Newton did not have the tools he needed to solve his problem. He could not explain certain problems like the rate of change in velocity of a falling object. Isaac Newton built a mathematical tool by himself. Today that tool is called calculus. Calculus helped to make the modern world possible. All engineers learn this useful tool and can solve all the problems that Isaac Newton struggled with and more. My wish is for my students to learn what tools are out there. To learn how to use tools and maybe if we are really, really lucky discover some tools that everyone can use to solve their problems.
