Teri H - Tutor in Fish Hoek

I am a pre-service Mathematics and Science teacher. I am currently completing my Bachelor of Education in Maths and Science for High School phase at UNISA (University of South Africa). I believe absolutely everyone can understand Maths and Science. I want to help students learn how to learn so they can take their education into their own hands. Maths and Science have a reputation of being confusing, difficult to understand and irrelevant to our lives. I want to show you that it does not have to be so. Every “I don’t know” if an opportunity for growth academically and within yourself. If you do not understand what you do not understand I would like to help you work through the content in such a way that you can pinpoint where you are struggling with and have the tools to teach yourself. I strongly believe everyone can enjoy and be "good" at Maths and Science. Albert Einstein once said, “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learnt in school.” I want to show you the real-world applications of what you are learning so you may leave school not with empty facts and formulas, but an Education and Wisdom. I am also informed in study skills and can help you in the transition from classroom to online learning.

Student teacher

I was a Student teacher at a High School where I helped in the classroom and taught a few lessons. I came to school after reading over the topic that would be covered that day and assisted learners in the classroom with homework and exercises. The few lessons I taught by myself I had a few days to prepare, but I was asked once or twice to teach a few minutes before hand so my skills and improvising a lesson were tested and my core knowledge was tested. I focused on working with individual students. Once before a lesson I worked with a student who was struggling and in the following lesson he had a "click" moment and finally grasped what we were covering.

Tutor

I was a private tutor at a charity organisation called the SOZO foundation and for a private client. For the SOZO fundation students would approach me to ask questions about their school subjects and look for help with whatever they were working on. For example I helped write essays, and explained evolution. For my private client I explained subjects in Mathematics and Science and went over homework questions correcting and reteaching where necessary. Preparation was minimal as I just needed to read over the topic we were covering, but rarely could I expect was would be asked of me. What is important about this experience is that I helped my students where their knowledge was lacking and helped them to arrive at conclusions themselves. This helped my students work on what they knew to figure out what they do not know.

Subjects taught
  • Math

When I was in High School I did not like Math class. I found it boring and hated the homework so I had more blank pages and doodles in my book than I could count. But I like how interconnected and experimental everything was. I liked how something I learnt in Grade 8 was built upon all the way into matric. It was only when I was in Grade 12 and my new math teacher was really great that I started to actually enjoy Maths. All of a sudden, I went from never doing my homework to only doing Math homework, because I was suddenly able to answer the questions “Why?” and “What if?” I want to help you get that same excitement for Maths that I suddenly developed, and the key to that experience lies within you. Many people do not give the phrase “practice makes perfect” enough credit. We learn by building pathways in our brains the first time we learn something, and then reinforcing them every time we practice. I want to help you build that pathway, then together we can work out what is the way to pave that pathway that suits you, as a learner, best.
