I believe anyone can learn the things they want to be skilled in. With patience and perseverance even the most difficult subject can be understood. I've been working in the finance industry for almost 10 years, this has taught me to focus on tasks at hand, plan ahead and manage the time available so that I can get all my tasks done. I've learned many things this way, even about things beyond my field of work. With the right approach, the learning process can be easy and enjoyable. Learning should be fun, not a boring chore.

My tasks were all the same tasks as a junior accountant, only I did not have to report to another senior anymore. I was given a lot more responsibility over clients. I had to manage my own list of clients and had to make sure that their bookkeeping, financial statements and all tax returns were submitted on time and correctly. I also review the work of junior accountants to verify the accuracy and timeliness.
I still continue to do all the tasks of a senior accountant - being a tax practitioner allows me to assist clients with more tax related issues than a general accountant. My area of experience is mainly taxation within the field of accounting. It's my duty to keep up to date with any new publications and legislation published by the SARS Commissioner and Government. I also assist junior accountants in managing their tasks and teaching them skills in order to complete their jobs effectively.
I left the administrative post in 2013 and started working on client's bookkeeping, while reporting to a senior accountant. My daily tasks included general data capturing, payroll administration, calculating VAT and other taxes payable by various clients in all sorts of industries. During these years I learned how to manage my tasks and deadlines. I was given a lot of work while still studying for my degree at Tuks. Working while studying also made both the studies and the job interesting - I got to see how the theory I learned in class was put into practice, but also had "fresh" knowledge that I could implement in my daily tasks at work.
My job was to take all incoming calls, arrange appointment, manage the office filing and archives. I also assisted the office manager in contacting debtors, following up on accounts and assisting accounting clerks with their data capturing. This was a part-time job and it taught me a lot of what I will be doing as an accountant if I wanted to pursue the field of accountancy.
Major subjects - Accounting, Taxation and Financial Management.
Maths is considered a difficult subject - but I think it's only difficult because the basics are not always taught effectively. When kids start to struggle and no one helps them to get maths right, they loose interest and consider themselves dumb. My brother was the one who helped me understand core principles behind maths. I believe it was because of his help that I always knew, that no matter how much I struggled, somehow I'd get to the solution. I would like to help other young kids to understand maths the same way.

In my line of work, I've had to use Excel in many ways that require learning advanced skills in the program. Being able to use Excel properly makes my job and tasks easier. I have also taught others and it was of great benefit to them.
