Avanya M - Tutor in Westridge
Avanya Manickum is currently in her final year of Geological Sciences at UKZN. She only has one module running at a time which allows her to focus on tutoring and keep herself updated with the school syllabus. She has done voluntary tutoring work for maths during high school. As an individual, she is motivated and always looking for new opportunities. As a tutor, she is patient and understanding. She enjoys explaining concepts to students in creative ways to ensure that they understand. She is able to break down concepts to fundamental levels for the student. She believes that by making sure the student understands and can answer questions on their own, they gain self-confidence and can achieve greater results. The subjects that she tutors are subjects that she enjoys and hopes to make it more enjoyable for the student. She enjoys puzzles, reading, writing, being outdoors and takes an interest in numerous topics. She values the environment and takes part in beach clean ups when she can. She also has a little sister who she plays with and mentors.

Maths Mentor
This was a voluntary position that I filled in High School. It involved meeting students after school to help with any maths issues that they experienced. Students would attend these session to ask for help with their homework or specific topics that they were struggling to understand. As a maths mentor, I aid students to solve their homework. My main goal was to ensure that the student understand what they were doing and why. If there was a specific concept that the student was struggling with. I would bring the student back to the basics and expand their understanding from there. This often involved a creative approach of explaining and breaking down the topic.

Mathematics
Mathematics was my favourite and strongest subject in high school. I matriculated with 88% in mathematics. This is a subject I have experience tutoring and am able to break down the concepts so that students understand. Mathematics is often viewed as difficult and I think a lot of students struggle with it. By tutoring this subject, I hope that the students I tutor reach a full understanding of concepts which get built on throughout their schooling.

Geography
I matriculated with 84% in geography. It was a subject I enjoyed and lead me to what I am currently studying, geological sciences. As someone in their final year of geological sciences, I have completed many modules that expand on topics learnt in high school. This broader understanding keeps the topics fresh in my mind and help me break them down to others.

Physical Sciences was something that interested me in high school. I matriculated with 83% in this subject. As someone who is able to conceptualise and think creatively, I believe I can help the student in areas that they are struggling.
