Music Theory tutors in Western Cape

My name is Alex Kibalenko - originally from the Ukraine - and I immigrated to beautiful Cape Town about 18 months ago, after marrying a South African citizen. I have a great passion for music and teaching. I have two diplomas as a Drummer and Percussionist, and more than a decade experience in the music industry. I have mastered a wide range of styles, using a vast variety of percussion instruments; including marimbas, vibraphone, xylophone, congas, bongos, timbales, guiros, maracas, and I've just recently started teaching myself to play the steel drum. I am a positive, easy-going, fun individual, and very easy to get along with. I love working with children of all ages, and I love sharing my knowledge. There is so much raw, natural talent in this lovely country, and I am so eager to do my part in helping to develop that.

Ruan Strauss Kalis was born in Paarl, South Africa, commencing piano and music theory studies at age 10. At age 14 he took up organ lessons and shortly after started studying composition under Paul Loeb van Zuilenberg (1993 – 1996). He matriculated at Paarl Boys’ High School in 1996. His professional music studies, majoring in Piano Performance, commenced in 1997 at the University of Stellenbosch under the guidance of the esteemed pianist and pedagogue, Melanie Horne. Following her death in 1998, he moved his studies to the University of Cape Town, where he completed the Performer’s Diploma in Music (majoring in Piano Performance) under the guidance of distinguished professors Lamar Crowson and Graham Fitch. Whilst studying for his undergraduate qualification, he performed at several masterclasses from renowned pianists, among which Leslie Howard, Martino Tirimo and Andrzej Jasiński. During the years 2003 and 2004, he taught piano and music as high school subject at Reddam House Atlantic Seaboard (College), as well as privately and later at the Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of the Western Cape. At the same time he wrote, compiled and hosted a radio programme for Fine Music Radio, as well as reading the news and weather reports. This period was followed by several years working in the hospitality industry, which included a year’s residency in London (U.K.). In 2012, he was appointed as Sales and Marketing Consultant for a piano specialist company, Ian Burgess-Simpson Pianos in Muizenberg, where he also fulfilled the roll as resident pianist, requiring regular performances for prospective buyers as well as for promotional purposes. In March 2013 his musical setting of poems from Antjie Krog’s Verweerskrif – a song cycle for Voice and Piano – was premiered at the Woordfees in Stellenbosch. Since his departure from Ian Burgess-Simpson Pianos, he has established himself as a voice artist, continues to compose and has commenced preparation for returning to the concert platform as pianist. He has also functioned as freelance organist up until the present date. Furthermore, he is a keen student of languages, having studied German to Matric level and later a refresher course, alongside an introductory course in French and currently Italian.

I have studied music at Stellenbosch University since 2011 and Graduated with my Advanced Diploma in Practical music (Distinction) in December 2016, and specialized in Recorder Solo performance and Euphonium as 2nd instrument. Music has made me the person I am today, and so has martial arts. I have acquired my 3rd level Brown belt in Karate and will be doing a Black belt exam in a few months time. I believe that teaching is one of the most important careers there are, because how will our knowledge be transmitted? I have always loved working with people - I guess I'm a "Peoples person".

I started violin lessons at the age of six and am currently studying and specialising in music education at the University of Cape Town. I have been studying for three years and will be going into my final undergraduate year. I have played in many orchestras under the batons of many excellent maestros. I have a deep love for teaching aswell as for the instrument itself and enjoy working with children.

24 Year old who recently returned from Australia after spending 3 years learning music and theology. I've been teaching music since I left school (guitar, bass and vocals) Friendly, outgoing and creative. Great believer that everyone is creative.

Since I can remember music has been my passion! After completing my BMus Honours at NMMU, I went to Stellenbosch to study choral conducting. I then completed my Post Graduate Certificate of Education in English, social sciences and arts and culture.   My corporate experience at Real Meal Revolution as a community manager (blog writing, content writing, social media marketing and analysis),administrator and head of education for our online courses and products. My work  as an online educator included marking assignments, graduating students, and preparing them for sales training.  I also worked for an NPO, Carpe Diem. My main focus was to generate leads and collect donations.     I am dynamic, creative and enthusiastic I am unassuming, easy to approach and easy to  get along with. I  am a strong communicator, able to express myself fully in both English and Afrikaans.

I have grade 7 level piano. Grade 8 theory and harmony. I can teach guitar and saxophone and I am very proficient at both instruments as well as the piano. I have played in a military march band and have been part of the Bach Choir in Johannesburg.

I am an avid musician and I have achieved my Grade 7 ABRSM Practical and Theoretical Certification in Music Theory and Piano. I still play regularly, and once again, my passion for the subject will certainly shine through in my teaching.

I did both Grade 6 UNISA and ABRSM music theory, in addition to music as a subject during matric, and have achieved a distinction in all. I am also a pianist and cellist who have a practical understanding of music. I'll show you that music theory is not something to be stressed about at all!
