Lani T - Tutor in Cape Farms

I grew up in a small town in the Northern Cape. After finishing high school I completed a BSc in Molecular Biology with majors in biochemistry and genetics and subsequently went on to complete my MSc in Molecular Biology with a focus on Immunology. I currently work for a company that does medical research. I have previously tutored high school students in Physical Science, Biology and Mathematics and really enjoy finding different ways to help students understand the study material instead of just memorizing it and hopefully in the process help encourage more students to go into STEM fields after school

Scientist

We conduct biomedical research for clients. This involves meeting with them to determine their research needs, putting together a research/study plan how to best achieve their goals. Then we will start on the actual project, either in in vitro systems or by recruiting participants samples after ethical approval is received. Data generated is analysed and compiled in a report for the client to review. Multiple of these projects run concurrently and in different phases of the process. Some days are spent in the lab, others in front of a computer analyzing data. No two projects are ever the same and this forces me to keep in learning.

Forensic DNA analyst

I worked in the biology and DNA section of the SAPS forensics lab. Our main goal was building up the DNA database with profiles of convicted offenders, SAPS officials etc

Research assistant

I was in charge of running and coordinating the daily activities of a research study that followed up TB patients during their treatment with an aim of finding biomarkers that will enable researchers to find new diagnostic tools. This involved the actual lab work, the admin work involved with dociumenting, arranging and communicating all the results from patients to the clinical staff.

Education
2011-01-01 - 2014-03-31
MSc Molecular Biology - Stellenbosch University

My masters research revolved around the use of different contraceptives and the effect they have on susceptibility to tuberculosis infection. In this project I had to combine my background in biology, chemistry and physics. I also had to use my mathematical skills to do statistical analysis of the data that was generated.

2010-01-01 - 2010-12-31
BscMedScHons in Molecular Biology - Stellenbosch University

My honours research revolved around finding better diagnostic tools for earlier and better detection of tuberculosis in children.

2007-01-01 - 2009-01-01
BSc Molecular Biology and Biotechnology - Stellenbosch University

Under graduate degree in science. Subject include chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, micro biology, biochemistry and genetics. My majors where biochemistry and genetics.

Subjects taught
  • Biology

I have a postgraduate degree in Molecular Biology and also work in the biomedical research field. Working and studying in this field has allowed me to keep up to date on the latest research and a deep understanding of most biological concepts taught in the school curriculum.

  • Physical Science

I have a postgraduate degree in Molecular Biology which is a field that uses elements of physics, chemistry and biology on a daily basis. This means that I am able to provide real life context for much of the material.
