Joshua P - Tutor in Plumstead

Hey there, my name is Josh! I am currently a third-year Actuarial Science student at UCT. I have been tutoring matric maths and physics for the last 2 years. I passed my IEB matric exams with six distinctions including 86 for Advanced Program English and 88 for mathematics. I scored 96 for my maths NBT. I feel as though I usually work best with strong students but I am extremely excited by the opportunity to reteach fundamentals to weaker students. I believe that high school mathematics often does students a disservice in the way it approaches fairly fundamental concepts. Despite my strong performance in high school, it wasn't until university that I grew to see the full picture behind a lot of the maths I was taught. Students are often shown how to follow steps to answer questions without a clear picture of the machinery behind what they are doing. In my experience, this often leads to weaker students feeling as though they "can't do maths". This attitude is naturally harmful and somewhat self-fulfilling. It is my hope as a tutor to enrich the mathematical world of strong students by offering a glimpse into the bigger picture and to build the confidence of weaker students by reapproaching questions starting from a more fundamental level.
