Hi there! My name is Josh. I am a 22 year old medical student at the University of Cape Town. I have a strong academic background with the credentials to prove it: I was Dux Scholar of my high school (Uplands College) in 2015 with an average of 89%; achieved 7 distinctions (including 95% for Mathematics, 93% for Physical Sciences and 90% for both Geography and Biology); achieved provincial colours for Maths (2014); and was named on the IEB's Commendable Achiever's List (2015). At university, I have continued to thrive academically, and I have been named on the Dean's Merit List (which is given in recognition of consistent academic excellence). I am passionate about learning new things and, during my studies at UCT, I have completed courses in Philosophy, Engineering, Biology, Economics and Accounting, however my real interests lie in the Health Sciences. I have two years of tutoring experience, having initially started tutoring orphaned children at the South African Children's Home in Cape Town. I have since gone on to tutor high school students at prestigious Cape Town schools. As a lifelong student, I am constantly investigating new methods of studying to keep things interesting and, more importantly, to make my study techniques more effective and efficient. I am a firm believer of the fact that how you learn is just as important as what you learn, and I'd love to share some of my techniques with you, should you decide to choose me as your tutor. Despite everything you have just read about me, I am not completely obsessed with academics - I am still a regular guy who enjoys having fun, joking around and making tutoring sessions engaging and interesting. So if any of this sounds like what you are looking for, feel free to contact me and we can book a tutoring session!

Joshua speaks Afrikaans and English
I am a native English speaker who is passionate about literature. I also have a 120 hour TESOL course qualification which equips me to teach the language. Beyond that, I achieved 85% for English in matric.

I have always been passionate about mathematics. I understand the importance of truly understanding the subject as opposed to just learning the rules as I believe this better equips students to tackle unique problems that they may encounter and generally leads to better performance in tests and exams. I represented Mpumalanga in mathematics competitions in high school (2014) and achieved 95% for mathematics at the end of matric. I have since done a few mathematics courses at university level.

I am passionate about Geography as a subject, and I often find myself reflecting about how learning this subject at school equipped me for the "real world" in many ways - be it from simple map reading to better understanding the principles of human geography to appreciating the awesomeness of how our physical world came to be. This passion lead me to achieve a 90% matric result for Geo, which was recognised by the IEB for being within the top 1% of all matric students in 2015. I have developed a particular study technique for tackling heavily content-based subjects (like Geo) which might help students remember the countless facts and principles associated with the subject when preparing for exams.

I believe that, fundamentally, biology is the study of the wonders of life - how we, as humans, and every other living organism came to be. When you put it like that, doesn't biology sound so much more interesting? I am fascinated by this subject, which is why I have dedicated by life to studying it (I study medicine which is, at its essence, as study of human biology, however I have also studied several courses at university level about microbiology, biodiversity and evolution). It is my passion for biology that lead me to achieve a final result of 90% for Life Sciences at the end of matric. I would love to share my knowledge and understanding of the subject (as well as my study techniques and exam tips) with you, should you choose me as your tutor.

For as long as I can remember, the world of science has fascinated me. It is for that reason that I pursued science-based degree programs (initially Engineering, currently Medicine) at university. In high school, I would often compete in Science Olympiads which I consistently performed well in (Top 100 in the Physical Sciences Olympiad (2015); 1st Place in Mpumalanga Mintek Quiz (2015)). I also achieved a final result of 93% for Physical Science at the end of matric. However, despite my passion for science, I understand that it can be a polarising subject and that some students require a little more time to come to grips with some of the concepts covered in the curriculum. I also think that these students have the most to gain from a tutor who is passionate, but patient, about this subject. I believe in the importance of understanding, and not just memorising, the concepts covered in the Science curriculum, and I would be delighted to have the opportunity to facilitate that learning.
