TEFL Tutoring: What is a TEFL Certification and how does it work?

English has become one of the fastest growing languages in many countries, both nationally and internationally. People are learning to speak and embrace the English Language, as it has become one of our top universal languages, used in daily conversations, schools and businesses alike. As more and more people become interested in learning or even teaching the language, there are companies that have taken notice of this and have provided the opportunity to benefit both sides of the spectrum.

Speaking English is very important, however being able to teach it as an official language to people of all different backgrounds and ages is a skill many require in order to teach successfully.

And that is where a TEFL course comes into play.

What is a TEFL certification?

TEFL, or Teaching English as a Foreign Language, has become very popular in the last few years. Many people have shown an interest in the course, either to learn English as a new language, improve upon their current language skills or to take the course and be able to teach it.

Obtaining a TEFL certification will show potential employers that you have the necessary knowledge, training and skills to teach English professionally to a single student or even a whole classroom. A TEFL course will teach you how to help no-English learners how to write, speak and read on a higher level or standard that they are currently. Securing a TEFL certification will earn you a higher position and income when looking into teaching English as a full-time or part-time career.

How long does it take to obtain a TEFL certificate?

The best thing about any TEFL training program is that there is an option to suit any person. TEFL training companies know that time and money play a huge role in any person’s life, and so, they have created different courses to suit each individual. The most basic course is a 120-hour TEFL course where the individual will learn basic teaching skills that focuses specifically on younger students. The most detailed course takes approximately 420 hours to complete where an individual will learn things such as teaching young children, teaching Business English to those in the corporate world and teaching IELTS (International English Language Testing System) to those wanting to move to international countries.

Whatever you need, TEFL has it.

How much does it cost to get a TEFL certificate?

As previously mentioned, there are different courses for different people. The courses vary between R2000 - R8000, depending on the type of course you take. The bigger courses cost more, as you receive more out of the certification in terms of skills, study materials, lessons plans etc.

What opportunities do I get from obtaining a TEFL certificate?

Are you TEFL certified? Then the world is your oyster! People who have obtained their certification have ample opportunities to teach English literally anytime and anywhere. You can choose between giving online classes or giving physical classes either at public or private locations. People from all over the world need TEFL tutors, and that is where you come in. Teach business English to corporate bodies in China, help small children learn how to read in Italy... the possibilities are endless.

There are even companies that offer a 6-12 months internship opportunities to those looking to travel and teach. From China, Thailand, Korea or Vietnam, if you are looking to travel and help teach along the way, TEFL is just for you. Here you will be flown out to a new environment and get paid to teach at a school, like a 9-5 job. The best part is that during the school holidays you will get the opportunity to explore new places, meet new people and learn about the different cultures the world has to offer.

TEFL has given so many people the opportunity to teach, learn and explore. The world is ever evolving and TEFL is just one more way we can help the world to move forward and to come together by embracing the universal language of our world.
