7 Tips for Choosing what to study in College/University

Are you still stuck trying to figure out what to do with your life after high school and how to choose what you want to study in college? The year is moving on, but it’s not too late to pick a career path and follow your dreams. Here are some helpful tips for making the right choice and studying a degree or course that you truly love.

 

1. Ask those close to you

Your family and friends know you best and can provide some great insight into what it is that you should consider studying. They know you, your strengths, weaknesses and what your talents are. Have a chat with your family and friends and hear what they have to say, they may just hit the nail on the head with their suggestions. This is a great way to start choosing what to study in college.

 

2. Don’t Focus solely on the costs

When choosing a degree or university course for the rest of your future, don’t focus entirely on the costs and how much it will set you or your parents back. You will be spending 3 to 4 years at this place, while building your future career, and you want to enjoy doing so.

If you’re really unsure as to what to do with your life and your family and friends have not provided the advice you need, consult a professional career counselor and hear what they have to say. These people are trained to give solid advice and to set you in the right direction, in terms of what will make you both happy and doing what you love. They give you practical advice on how to choose a course or degree that you will enjoy for the rest of your life.

 

5. Consider the Opportunities within your preferences

You may think that there are only one or two choices as to what you can do with your life with regards to the fields you have interest in. However, you don’t have to be a math teacher purely because you enjoy working with numbers. There are a myriad of options out there for each industry and you may be surprised as to all the career opportunities that are open to you.

 

6. Make a List

Make a list of pros and cons about what it is that you want to do. What are the negatives and what are the positives? What can you cope with and what can you cope without? What would make you happy and unhappy? What is better about one tertiary institution compared to another? These are the kinds of questions you need to ask yourself to make an informed decision that will have you fulfilled and feeling satisfied for the next few years at least. Dig deep into question based clues and this will certainly help you on how to choose a course in college.

 

7. Do what you Love

The most important thing of all is that you genuinely love what you do. You should have the opportunity to live out your dreams and enjoy each day to the fullest, rather than resenting your work and what you are doing. There is a quote by Marc Anthony that says “If you do what you love, then you will never work a day in your life”. You deserve that. You deserve to be that happy, that work never feels like work as you end each day knowing you’ve achieved a little more on your journey through life.
